The Cake & Kindness Book Club: A Welcoming Monthly Read in Southsea

We're really excited to share something a little different from us. We've teamed up with the wonderful team at Spark Community Space in Southsea to launch the Cake & Kindness Book Club, a monthly gathering for anyone who loves books, values good conversation, or simply wants to be part of a kind and welcoming community.

What is the Cake & Kindness Book Club?

The Cake & Kindness Book Club is exactly what it sounds like: a relaxed, pressure-free space where book lovers come together over cake and a cuppa to share their thoughts, or simply enjoy being in the room. There's no obligation to speak, no quiz at the end, and no judgment if you didn't finish the book. You're welcome just as you are.

It takes place every third Wednesday of the month, from 7pm to 9pm, at Spark Community Space, a brilliant independent venue tucked inside The Pompey Centre in Southsea. Every penny from ticket sales supports Spark, so by attending you're directly helping to keep a valuable community space alive and thriving.

Our first book: Hamnet

We're kicking things off with Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell, a beautifully written, deeply moving novel about grief, love, and family, set in Elizabethan England. It's a book that sparks rich conversation, which makes it the perfect choice to open the club.

Books aren't included in the ticket price, but to keep things as accessible as possible you're free to source your copy in whatever format suits you best: print, e-book, or audiobook all count.

A book club built on kindness

We wanted to create something that genuinely feels different. The Cake & Kindness Book Club is designed to be inclusive and welcoming to everyone, whether you're a lifelong reader, someone getting back into books, or simply looking for a warm space to spend an evening. You can listen, chat, or just enjoy the atmosphere. There's no wrong way to be here.

Running this alongside Spark Community Space felt like a natural fit. Spark is a space built around community and connection, and that's exactly the spirit we want to bring to the book club.
